“Ancient Sound of Dunhuang” is the world’s first cave-style immersive theater production, supported by the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee; planned by the Publicity Department of the CPC Gansu Provincial Committee; and supervised and produced by Gansu Performing Arts Group. The show’s executive production is by Guangzhou Mingdao Cultural Industry Development Co., Ltd., with overall creative direction by Hainan OCT Culture & Performance Co., Ltd., and multimedia digital content designed, produced, and implemented on site by the Studio10 new-media digital art team. With the mission of “bringing Dunhuang culture to life,” the production brings a millennium of Dunhuang music, dance, poetry, and mural art onto the stage to create an immersive journey across time.”
The Mogao Caves in Dunhuang comprise 492 grottoes, of which as many as 240 are related to music. Within these caves, there are 3,346 depictions of musicians, 490 ensembles, and 44 different types of instruments totaling 4,330 pieces—attesting to the central role of music in Dunhuang art. “Ancient Sound of Dunhuang” builds upon this profound cultural legacy, seeking a contemporary expression of ancient music and dance, and reviving the vitality of the Silk Road’s diverse cultural exchanges.
The entire production integrates music, projection imagery, lighting, stage machinery, installations, and scenic props in a multidimensional presentation, enhanced by live performances from the actors, to create what is called the “Living Cave No. 736.” The theater space dissolves the traditional boundary of the stage, allowing the audience to walk, pause, and look around freely, immersing themselves in a narrative environment woven by light, shadow, and sound. As the storyline unfolds, the long-lost ancient music of Dunhuang is given a “new voice,” while the dances and poetic imagery from the murals are vividly brought back to life before their eyes.
“Ancient Sound of Dunhuang” places instrument reconstruction and research achievements at its core, reviving ancient instruments depicted in Dunhuang murals such as the five-string pipa, se (zither), konghou (angular harp), longfengdi (dragon-phoenix flute), paixiao (panpipes), and sheng (mouth organ). It further incorporates instruments rich in exotic character, including the satar, ajieke (Uyghur bowed lute), and sitar, creating a symphonic realm that transports the audience into the cultural crossroads of the Silk Road. Dancers move in harmony with the music, murals are illuminated by light and shadow, together presenting the enduring legacy and charm of Dunhuang’s musical culture over the centuries. Audiences have acclaimed the production as “exquisite beyond compare” and hailed it as a truly “epic audio-visual feast.”
