"Visitors who wish to experience the printing of Spring Festival couplets, please line up here." During the Spring Festival holiday, the reporter walked into the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum, located on the northern extension of Beijing's Central Axis. Upon turning the corner in the exhibition hall of "Celebrating the Spring Festival — Bingwu Year Themed Exhibition Series", they were immediately greeted by a long queue of visitors.
In the queue, people were looking forward eagerly, eager to have a try.Under the guidance of the staff, participants placed red paper on the printing block, brushed it gently, and a fragrant Spring Festival couplet fresh off the press was completed.
"We found the perfect way to celebrate the Spring Festival at the Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum."
What does an exhibition themed "Celebrating the Spring Festival" look like? This exhibition is divided into 4 thematic sections —
"Time & Order: Renewal of the Calendar" presents the basics of traditional Chinese calendar and the evolution of Lunar New Year celebrations. What astronomical patterns guided the making of the calendar? What are "double‑spring years" and "no‑spring years"? Why is there no New Year's Eve (30th day) this year? These lesser‑known facts about the Spring Festival have drawn many visitors to stop and concentrate.
"Steeds Leaping on a Grand Journey" showcases intangible cultural heritage items related to the horse, conveying the elegant image and auspicious symbolism of the horse in traditional culture. From folk paper-cuttings featuring horse patterns to sculptures of horses in various styles and materials, the most popular attraction is the two colorfully decorated bamboo horses, which attract passing children to take turns riding them.
"Food Is Heaven" focuses on the broad food outlook and demonstrates the close relationship between intangible cultural heritage preservation, Spring Festival customs and food security from the perspectives of planting, storage, processing and sharing. In the central area stands the dough artwork "Drum Jujube Mountain", which is 4.5 meters high and 3.6 meters in diameter. It was created by 18 craftspeople over the course of one month, presenting the exquisite craftsmanship of Chengcheng dough art from Shaanxi.Around it are clustered dough sculptures from Shanxi, including "Peacock and Peony" and "Surplus Year After Year" from Lan County, as well as "Dragon and Phoenix Present Prosperity" from Wenxi flower buns, fully displaying the diverse and superb dough-making techniques of northern China.
"Light Brings Spring Radiance" displays the festive joy of thousands of households through exquisite lanterns. The lanterns of various sizes immerse visitors in a splendid scene just like "a night breeze brings a thousand trees in bloom".
Going to the Spring Festival fair is an indispensable memory of the festival atmosphere for many people.A corner of the exhibition hall is arranged as a lively market. The exhibition areas of different provinces present their distinctive intangible cultural heritage items. Each stall is decorated with red lanterns marked with "Star Products" — Longquan celadon from Zhejiang, Helan ink slabs from Ningxia, palm weaving from Hunan, Pu'er tea from Yunnan, and more.
"Ding-dong, ding-dong..." Clear sounds ring out now and then while walking through the fair.Following the sound, many children are seen holding painted clay animals in their hands."This is called 'Bada', it was used in the past to scare away the Nian beast," introduced Guo Jiayi, person in charge of the Shandong exhibition area. The toy comes from a representative inheritor of Niejiazhuang Clay Sculpture, a national-level intangible cultural heritage item.
"In addition to the thematic exhibition, we have added recreational activities, food events, a New Year paintings exhibition and a photography exhibition this year. Half of the museum space is devoted to Spring Festival-related displays to create a strong festive atmosphere and meet people's expectations for the Spring Festival in as many ways as possible," said Wang Chenyang, Secretary of the Party Committee of the China Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum.
