The exhibition consists of five thematic sections—“Lingge World: Kizil Caves,” “Ancient Gems: Mogao Caves of Dunhuang,” “Oriental Smile: Maijishan Caves,” “Shared Origins: Yungang Grottoes,” and “Marvelous Realm: Longmen Grottoes”—along with an “Immersive Experience Hall.” Through the innovative use of cutting-edge technologies such as digital modeling, AI algorithms, and interactive media, it integrates digital imagery with representative mural reproductions, sculptures, and rubbings from the collection of the Fo Guang Yuan Art Gallery Headquarters. This allows visitors to experience history and art in a more multidimensional and immersive way.

As a concrete practice in revitalizing grotto art, the exhibition opens new perspectives for interpreting and appreciating cave art, while also breaking through the traditional limitations of immovable cultural relic display in both technological and perceptual dimensions.

Grotto temples are an essential part of China’s ancient cultural heritage—brilliant gems in the long course of Chinese civilization, carrying distinctive historical, cultural, and artistic value. It is hoped that this exhibition will further promote cross-strait exchange and cooperation in the protection, inheritance, display, and promotion of grotto temples; foster integration and mutual learning among different art forms across the strait; and guide audiences to gain a deeper appreciation of the unique aesthetics and diverse values formed through the long evolution of grotto art, jointly advancing the creative transformation and innovative development of China’s fine traditional culture.

According to the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, the institution has continued to focus on the theme of Chinese grotto art, organizing large-scale annual exhibitions in line with its curatorial strategy. Since 2019, it has successively presented the Buddhist art treasures of the Longmen Grottoes in Luoyang, the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, the Yungang Grottoes in Datong, and the Maijishan Caves in Gansu, attracting millions of visitors to experience the splendor of millennia-old cave art.

This year, the Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum, in collaboration with the National Museum of China, presents this exhibition, expanding its scope to encompass China’s five major grotto complexes. By placing the ancient grotto temples in dialogue with the modern architecture of Fo Guang Shan, the exhibition reveals the enduring resonance and distinctive charm of Buddhist art across the ages.
